I'm a science graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, though my career took a sharp turn away from the lab not long after I left it. I spent a few years as an environmental scientist before sports betting analysis took over — a shift that traces back to 1991, when I worked as a bet runner for Patrick Veitch, a mathematician who went on to become one of Britain's most formidable horse racing gamblers. Watching how he actually made his edge work, rather than just talking about it, changed the direction of my career.

I've spent the two decades since then doing the unglamorous part of gambling: collecting data, testing it, and being willing to be wrong in public when the numbers say so. In 2001 I launched Football-Data.co.uk, a historical results and odds database that's still used by analysts across the industry, and later built Tennis-Data.co.uk on the same principle. Sports-Tipsters.co.uk grew out of a simpler frustration — there was no independent way to check whether a tipster's advertised record was actually true, so I built one.

I've written four books along the way — Fixed Odds Sports Betting, How to Find a Black Cat in a Coal Cellar, Squares & Sharps, Suckers & Sharks, and Monte Carlo or Bust — and I'm a regular contributor to Pinnacle's Betting Resources hub. What ties all of it together is the same conviction: if a number can't survive being checked, it isn't worth publishing.
